why I didn't think of this before. Earlier in the summer I went on a quest (well, just to Target) to find a drainer to replace the icky mold infested one that was existing in my kitchen. (It now lives up north in the cottage. I still couldn't part with it.) I went on this quest a few other times and could not find a suitable replacement. Drainers are not very large anymore. I think many people have dishwashers and perhaps there just isn't a need for large drainers. Maybe families are smaller, maybe people eat out...I don't know the reason, I just know they are hard to find.
I finally found a drainer I thought could work for us....nice big utensil area, large basket, stainless steel and 5 cup holders. My husband hated it and said I needed to find another one if he was to help with dishes. Well, I went to looking...I wasn't going to lose my man in the kitchen.
I searched on the Internet and found some lovely drainers...but still on the small side. I found some double decker things that might have enough space, but they weren't practical at all. We would struggling just to empty the thing. Then it dawned on me. What if I had a mat under two drainers!? (I am still working on the mat. I looked at Sam's today and found some nice floor mats for a car...but the water wouldn't drain off.) So, this is what we are doing now. I found another nice sized drainer at Target (one of my favorite stores) and moved it to the main position. I put the large utensil holder on the main drainer and it has 7 cup holders. The reject drainer is now functioning as the overflow drainer with a towel under it to catch the water. I will have to change this regularly, but I figure I am always doing laundry anyway...so no big deal. We were piling the overflow on a towel for years, so this is a much improved system.
Now some of you are wondering, with all the overflow why not just dry the dishes? Well, there are a few reasons: more time involved, more people in a little kitchen, I wouldn't be able to look at my accomplishment, and all the cups would not fit in the cabinet. So, there you go.
